Main countries and languages of immigrants coming at the Niagara point of entry:
The largest number of immigrants coming into Canada at the Fort Erie Peace Bridge came from Columbia in 2007, Haiti in 2008 and from Columbia in 2009. In 2009, the main language spoken by immigrants at the Niagara point of entry was Spanish, followed by English, Creole, French, Tamil and Tibetan.
NOTE: Approximately 18-20% of Niagara’s population is made up of immigrants. Statistics Canada projects that by the year 2031 almost half of Canada’s population over the age of 15 will be foreign-born or have at least one foreign-born parent.
