The Niagara Health System (NHS), Ontario’s largest multi-site hospital amalgamation is comprised of 7 sites and serves over 434,000 residents across the region. Currently, the NHS has almost 900 acute care, complex continuing care, mental health, long term care and addictions treatment beds. The NHS has 4,154 employees and 599 physicians. A new hospital site is currently under construction and is expected to open in St. Catharines in the spring of 2012. This new facility will provide services to meet the needs of acute care, cardiology, mental health and oncology patients. Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre focuses on complex continuing care and rehabilitation. Currently, it provides 134 active in-patient beds, provides a full range of out-patient rehabilitative medicine and employs 400 staff members and employs 40 medical staff members. West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, located in Grimsby, is a 48 bed hospital with 370 employees, offering medical/surgical, obstetrics, complex continuing care, intensive care, emergency services as well as outpatient diagnostic and treatment services. In 2009-2010, WLMH had 116 credentialed professional staff, consisting of 50 active staff. Community Health Centres (CHCs) work with individuals, families and communities to strengthen their capacity for health and wellbeing. They provide a focus on health promotion and illness prevention. Generally, these services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team which are based on the needs of the specific community that they serve. Niagara now has 4 CHCs. Quest CHC, located in St. Catharines, provides a range of community-based health and social services with a focus on some of the more vulnerable populations in the area. Bridges CHC provides care to the residents of Fort Erie, Port Colborne and Wainfleet. Bridges provides services to their priority populations of families and individuals with low income, newcomers, seniors, children and youth. Centre de santé communautaire Hamilton/Niagara in Welland provides a range of services to the francophone population of Niagara. These services include primary health care; maternal and family and senior support; anti-violence programs; counselling; distress line for women; nutrition counselling; and settlement services. The Niagara Falls CHC has identified priority clients as those without a healthcare provider, those with mental health and/or addiction issues, low income families, isolated seniors, at risk children and youth, street persons, newcomers and people living with physical disabilities.
