Workplace Injuries

Injuries in the workplace data for Niagara:  Workplace injuries affect the employee and the employer in very significant ways with days and productivity lost as well as costs incurred.

• In 2010, employers based in Niagara accounted for approximately 2-3% of Total Injuries (TI) (Schedule 1 & 2)
• When comparing 2010 to 2006, Total injuries have been reduced by approximately 36%. Lost-time injuries (LTIs) and no lost-time injuries (NLTIs) experienced similar reductions of 32% and 37% respectively
• In 2010, LTIs accounted for approximately 30% of total injuries.
• When comparing 2010 to 2009, all injury counts experienced reductions of 9% or greater.

Lost Time Injuries by leading events for employers with a head office in the Niagara Region

• In 2010, bodily reaction and exertion, contact with objects and equipment, and falls accounted for approximately 87% of all LTIs for employers with a head office based in Niagara Region.
• When comparing 2010 to 2009, 2 event categories (assaults and violent acts, fires and explosions) experienced an increase in LTIs for traumatic fatalities for employers with a head office in the Niagara Region.

Lost-Time Injuries (LTIs) are all allowed injury/illness claims by workers who have lost wages as a result of temporary or permanent impairment;  No Lost-Time Injuries (NLTIs) are all allowed injury/illness claims by workers who have not lost wages, but who have incurred health care expenses; Total Injuries refer to all allowed injury/illness claims (lost-time, no lost-time, and traumatic fatality) by workers; and Injury Year represents the year in which the injury/illness occurred; LTI counts are reflective of those employers with a Head Office in the region specified.
