Six new projects:  In November of 2010, the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario announced $15 million to fund six affordable housing projects for low-income seniors, low-income families and persons with disabilities in the Niagara Region (133 affordable housing units).

Accessibility: Niagara Regional Housing (NRH) is overseeing an accessibility initiative to review practices, processes and built environments for barriers to access for persons with disabilities by:

  • Working in partnership with Niagara Region’s Accessibility Advisory Committee
  • Inspecting all affordable housing buildings to learn where improved access is needed (with the guidance of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005)
  • Using the standards of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act as a guide to removing barriers for persons with disabilities in all aspects of the NRH organization.

Welcome Home Niagara: 181 households purchased their own homes in Niagara with the assistance of the home ownership component of the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program (AHP), administered by NRH and funded through the federal and provincial governments. This program was introduced in 2006 to help renters become homeowners through down payment assistance in the form of a forgivable loan.
